911 Funding & Legislative Issues
In February 2008, the Kent County Board of Commissioners approved a request by the Dispatch Authority to levy a 45 cent surcharge on communication services that are capable of accessing 911, beginning July 1, 2008. The surcharge is authorized by State statute to be levied through December 31, 2014.
Funding the Authority through a surcharge enables the Authority to implement technical initiatives that will enhance the delivery of 911 services to citizens as well as to the responding police, fire, and EMS agencies without requiring more funds from local units of government. If you want more information about those initiatives, check out the Strategic Plan posted on the homepage.
Below are links to the current legislation (which enables the surcharge), copies of the Board resolutions authorizing the surcharge, and a fact sheet about the surcharge.
